Into the valley of death
Article Abstract:
Peter Conrad has been tutor in English at Christ Church college, Oxford for almost 20 years having joined New College from Tasmania in 1968, and he has after all this time just produced his first novel. By the end of 1979 he had written four critical works and wrote regular articles for The Observer. In the last ten years his most important achievement has been the Everyman History of English Literature which was published in 1985. It took him a full two years to do. His turn at last on a novel he sees as part of his own personal logic.

Does she protest too much?
Article Abstract:
Jude Kelly, artistic director of the West Yorkshire Playhouse, has attracted considerable attention, and is now seen as one of the most likely candidates to take over Richard Eyre's position at the National Theatre. She has a very down-to-earth manner, distinguishing her clearly from the type of personality normally associated with the theatre. Some observers have accused her of self-promotion, but she claims that she is simply trying to promote the arts.
