And the blind shall see
Article Abstract:
The department of bioengineering at the University of Utah is linking with the department of optometry at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology to work on a project to restore some useful vision to blind people. It is hoped in the long term to develop a system using a video camera attached to a pair of spectacles, delivering electrical stimulation directly to an array of micro-electrodes embedded in the visual cortex of the blind person's brain. Separately, Dr Joseph Rizzo of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Professor John Wyatt of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are heading a multidisciplinary team which aims to develop a microchip which can be attached to the surface of the retina, rather than to the brain.

Protection by detection
Article Abstract:
The MacAleese Industries Inc., New Mexico, is developing an appliance, using short-range radar, which can identify hidden weapons from a distance, suitable for use in schools. A pulse of radio energy is directed at people, and detects any metal objects being carried. Software enables the detector to recognise objects and pick out weapons, with 99.2% success according to laboratory tests. The device could also be used at airports, banks, and in taxis. The company hopes to produce the device at under 3,000 dollars.

Can we trust hydrogen again?
Article Abstract:
Scientists now believe that liquid hydrogen has considerable potential as an environmentally-friendly aviation fuel. Daimler-Benz Aerospace engineers are linking with Russian and German research partners to work in this area, and have developed a commercially viable aircraft, known as the 'Cryoplane,' which is fuelled by liquid hydrogen. This fuel can be generated from water and has almost three times the energy/mass ratio of kerosene.
