Britannia without the Brit
Article Abstract:
The BBC Promenade season is beginning to take on a more international flavour. Indeed, in the 1998 season an American will be singing 'Rule, Britannia!' at the final concert. Andrew Davis, Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, believes that it is important for audiences to be reminded that even the final night of the Promenade season is not an exclusively British occasion. Music to be performed during the season includes Berlioz's 'The Damnation of Faust' and Julian Anderson's 'The Stations of the Sun.'

For sale: the corporate concerto
Article Abstract:
Composers often find that there can be advantages associated with receiving funding from large companies for new works, as long as the company does not set too many conditions. This source of funding is more reliable than funding from the Arts Board, which often involves the composer or publisher raising half the cost. Recent developments in this area have included the commissioning by Japanese car manufacturer Mazda of 'Song of the Swift' from John Harle to accompany the launch of its new cars.
