Article Abstract:
The shares of UK companies which have been privatised have performed better than the stock market as a whole. This, along with the low issue price, will ensure the success of the forthcoming privatisation of Railtrack. Of the 100 stocks in the Footsie index, 17 are now privatisation issues, and these concerns had a combined market capitalisation of more than 90 billion pounds sterling in at the end of the first quarter of 1996. Investors should be aware that privatisation does bring large short-term gains in efficiency, but that the best way to derive a strong profit from equities is to purchase shares with a strong market position and sustainable earnings growth.

Article Abstract:
Investment adviser Jim Slater has considerable influence among UK investors, despite a rather mixed career. He has published some very interesting books which offer practical advice, and has introduced many ordinary people to the principles of investment. However, it is possible to express some doubts about the merits of his technique for identifying growth stocks, which is based on seeking shares where the ratio between the company's likely price/earnings ratio and its predicted earnings growth is low.
