Could the map turn red again on Sunday?
Article Abstract:
The main battle in the forthcoming Russian presidential election is between Boris Yeltsin, who is seeking a second term in office, and Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov. Both of these men are likely to gain enough support in the first round to place them in direct conflict in the second round in Jul 1996, but neither will obtain the 50% of the vote required for outright victory. Considerable efforts will be made by both sides to ensure that the election is carried out as fairly as possible.

Uneasy silence surrounds Yeltsin
Article Abstract:
Surgeons treating Russian president Boris Yeltsin are to meet shortly to decide whether to go ahead with a heart bypass operation. There is little reliable information about the state of his health, and it rumoured that the operation may be postponed or even cancelled altogether. There is now considerable uncertainty about the future of his presidency, although Yeltsin himself will probably be determined to remain in power if at all possible.
