Ireland's message for the Pope
Article Abstract:
The Pope will almost certainly raise a number of current Irish issues when he meets Irish president Mary Robinson shortly. These will include the widespread availability of contraception and the Divorce Act. However, Robinson has considerable stature, and it is likely that she will make her views known strongly to the Pope too. She is highly respected for her intelligence, commitment and compassion, and has spoken out strongly for the cause of women. She is a strong example of why Irish women should not meekly accept the dictates of the Catholic Church.

Castro's historic gamble: can the Pope help Cuba to come in from the cold?
Article Abstract:
The five-day visit by the Pope to Cuba, where support for Catholicism has been waning, is regarded as having great political significance. Religious authorities are keen to stress that the only purpose of the visit is to strengthen the Catholic Church in Cuba, but many observers believe that Cuban leader Fidel Castro is hoping to use the visit to end the country's isolation and to gain favourable media coverage. He also anticipates that the Pope will criticize the US embargo that has badly damaged Cuba's economy.

Pope calls for Solidarity spirit to revive homeland
Article Abstract:
Large numbers of people have congregated to see Pope John Paul II on his 13-day visit to Poland, his homeland. He is clearly still Poland's most popular leader, wielding considerable influence. Poland is very divided, and his visit across the country will present an opportunity for reconciliation, at least on a spiritual level. He has attracted many young people, even though the Catholic Church is often in conflict with young people on issues such as contraception and abortion.
