Public schools from private purses
Article Abstract:
The fact that Labour party leader Tony Blair has denied any plans to introduce VAT on public school fees will not have reassured the schools and the middle classes about the party's intentions regarding public schools. The party is no longer stating that the independent sector should be abolished, but it still does not believe that independent schools should receive public funds. This is why it is believed to be considering policies which will remove public subsidies to private institutions.

Clinton's 'solid footing' leaves a lot to be desired
Article Abstract:
The US is currently running a very large budget surplus. Almost all forecasts indicate that this will continue to be the case. President Bill Clinton wants most of the surplus to be saved, rather than returned to ordinary people in the form of tax cuts or invested in areas such as healthcare. Saving the surplus would reduce the national debt, an approach welcomed by many economists. However, it can be argued that saving the surplus could be a negative move, especially if deflation emerges.
