Is it just for toffs and dandies?
Article Abstract:
The decision by UK Chancellor Gordon Brown to wear an ordinary suit, rather than a dinner suit, when he delivers his Mansion House speech can be viewed as part of a wider attempt by the Labour party to portray itself as classless. Members of the new Labour government are being careful to dress in a very down-to-earth way, reflecting the image they wish to give of their approach to dealings with the City of London and other institutions. However, this approach may prove mistaken, as an ordinary suit conveys an impression of anonymity and excessive control.

Culture is booming, just don't blow it
Article Abstract:
The UK's cultural life was still relatively limited in 1979, when the Conservative party came to power. Culture was closely controlled by bureaucracies and government agencies, and there were few cultural connections with other countries. The best architecture was mainly state-funded, and the arts were subsidised, but not often sponsored. The Conservative administration introduced many changes, establishing the National Lottery to fund arts projects, for example, and boosting the creation of a thriving 'culture' industry.
