Is money spent on students wasted?
Article Abstract:
There are mixed views about whether graduates are of real benefit to the UK economy. Some observers believe that students learn skills which boost their productivity when they enter the world of work, and that the overall productivity of the UK economy is therefore increased. However, others believe that higher education does not boost the productivity of students. Employers favour graduates because they have innate qualities, rather than because their potential productivity is high. Individual students gain from higher education, but there are no benefits to the economy as a whole.

20bn pounds sterling has been wasted. People have died. Yet the ministry to blame is still a slave to the farming business. Only when secrecy ends will consumers come first
Article Abstract:
The UK's ministry of agriculture, food and fisheries has never really worked to defend the interests of consumers, as it is strongly influenced by the powerful food producers' lobby and by financial considerations. It has, for example, failed to reveal the true extent of the link between BSE and CJD, and has not taken fast enough action at any stage in the BSE crisis. Similar lack of responsibility has been shown by European Commission officials, who should also have defended the interests of consumers.
