Is there still life in the 20th century?
Article Abstract:
The Hayward Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'Objects of Desire: The Modern Still Life.' This exhibition covers a very wide range of material, and almost goes as far as presenting a miniature history of modern art. The fact that it is so extensive could be a negative thing, as it tends to encourage the visitor not to look very closely at individual works. It is very keen to bring together works by many famous artists, and in doing so does not allow room for any real finds.

Heroism in defeat
Article Abstract:
The Hayward Gallery's touring exhibition 'Kathe Kollwitz - Artist of the People' is currently at the Gateway Galleries in Shrewsbury, England. It covers 20 prints, of which 19 date from between 1890 and 1912. They generally show timeless images, but in a certain way are also clearly historic. This is because they portray a concept of 'the people' which hardly exists any more. They focus on social-realist and workerist themes, and are not influenced by modern art.
