Is this the work of man or nature?
Article Abstract:
Genetic engineers at Harvard University are seeking a European patent for their genetically engineered mouse. They claim that it is an 'invention,' and should be covered by patent law as it has 'utility' in research into how cancerous tumours form. This presents a very difficult issue for the European Patent Office, especially as more genetically engineered animals are likely to be developed in the future. There have been many protests from groups including animal welfare organisations and environmentalists.

If you're out there, we're ready for you
Article Abstract:
Some researchers have spent many years trying to establish whether there could be life on other planets, and there are now at least five search for extra-terrestrial intelligence (Seti) projects underway. The most well known is Project Phoenix, which operates from the Seti Institute in California and has recently completed a survey of the southern skies. Theoretical calculations indicate that there should be at least 10 civilisations in the galaxy capable of communications with Earth.

What on earth has space done for us?
Article Abstract:
Space research has received extensive investment over the last few decades, but there seem to have been few real benefits to ordinary people from this work. Some observers even claim that putting men into space actually damaged, rather than assisted, the US. However, others point out that improving our understanding of the Universe has a bearing on our understanding of our place in the Universe.
