Tories attack Labour's charade of spin
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Labor party has been accused of seeking to manipulate the press to draw attention away from the separation of the Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, and his wife. The Labor party has been accused of using meetings with the press to provide on the royal yacht and an inquiry into Hong Kong's former governor, Chris Patten, by MI6, to focus attention away from Cook. Meanwhile the departure of press officers from the civil service has been seen by some civil servants as evidence that the prime minister aims to tighten control of government information.

Ulster holds its breath as Trimble agonises
Article Abstract:
The Ulster Unionist party, led by David Trimble, is still calling for written guarantees that decommissioning of terrorist weapons will take place while cross-party talks on the future of Northern Ireland are taking place. However, it now seems unlikely that Trimble will decide to withdraw the party from the talks if decommissioning does not take place. It may be possible to avoid serious conflict by postponing a vote in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on the joint Anglo-Irish plans for decommissioning.

What price to shore up the Tories?
Article Abstract:
The UK's Conservative government relies on the support of the Ulster Unionists to retain a majority, but emphasises that it will not take decisions simply to please the Ulster Unionists. However, prime minister John Major is aware that not meeting the demands of the Ulster Unionists could prompt a collapse of the peace process in Northern Ireland. There will be no formal pact with the Ulster Unionists, but their leader, David Trimble, could be given a place in a Conservative cabinet.
