Bears set to make way for bulls on Russia's prospects
Article Abstract:
It has generally been widely assumed that Russia will continue to experience severe economic difficulties for many years to come. However, this view overlooks the fact that Russia has a number of positive economic features. These include very large reserves of natural resources, a highly-educated population and a vast land area. It is possible that Russia will become a wealthy functioning democracy in the medium term, going against all expectations.

Capitalism blooms in Russia's chaos
Article Abstract:
A recent OECD report gives an interesting insight into the state of the Russian economy. Few reliable statistics are available, and makes it difficult to assess how much real growth there has really been. It is clear that the service sector has growth rapidly, but this has not been sufficient to balance out the decline suffered by industry. Real living standards have fallen, but personal incomes have stopped declining and could even be increasing.

Whatever happens, Russia can do no wrong
Article Abstract:
Many western observers assume that Russian politics will determine the country's future economic development. This has certainly been the case in the past, but there are now signs that economic progress will take place quite independently of political developments. Those who support this view believe that Russia will see economic growth averaging 5% a year over the next decade, even though inflation will be high, at 30-150% a year.
