Israeli right makes a stand over settlements
Article Abstract:
Yitzhak Shamir's coalition government in Israel has lost its majority, as right wingers have left the party over the issue of Jewish settlements on the West Bank. As Palestinian Guerillas attacked settlers, radicals called for an acceptance of the state of Palestine. The US peace initiative, sweetened by loan guarantees is also moving towards giving Palestine some autonomy. Opponents see both moves as a surrender and the end of the vision of a Greater Israel, and minister have resigned thus losing the government its majority. Settlement building will continue while an election campaign takes place.

Foreign Office excellence threatened by criticism
Article Abstract:
Senior officials at the Foreign Office, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Treasury and the Ministry of Defence failed to keep former prime minister Margaret Thatcher informed about the policy on arms sales to Iran and Iraq agreed by junior ministers, according to the Scott report into the arms-to-Iraq affair. Information was filtered by Sir Charles Powell, the senior Foreign Office diplomat who was acting as an advisor to Margaret Thatcher. The report is particularly critical of the Middle East Department of the Foreign Office.

Foreign Office makes sure it has the last word
Article Abstract:
Many speakers at the recent conference on 'Britain in the World' put forward very convincing arguments, using many literary and historical references. In some cases, speakers from abroad displayed a wider knowledge of British literature and history than their British counterparts. However, they were all outshone by Sir John Coles, head of the diplomatic service, who made a very strong defence of his department.
