Red alert, men! The bees are under siege
Article Abstract:
The varroa mite, which can destroy bee colonies, was discovered in Torquay, Devon, in Apr 1992. It has been prevalent in Germany for 15 years and France for 10 years and expert apiarists warned the Ministry of Agriculture Bee Officers about the risk in 1990. The Government restricted the movement of hives within 25 miles of Okehampton, Devon, in an attempt to prevent the mite spreading, but there are several areas of infection in southern England. There are about 35,000 beekeepers in Britain.
