Article Abstract:
The election of Ehud Barak as Israeli Prime Minister marks the beginning of another optimistic phase in the Middle East peace process. He has secured a strong base in the Knesset, and is now meeting Arab leaders before seeing President Bill Clinton. He is seeking rapid progress, but the main obstacle is that the Palestinians feel too weak to make a permanent peace.
