Italy faces a new Albanian armada

Article Abstract:

Many illegal immigrants continue to cross from Albania to Italy. The Italian authorities are well aware of how many boats make the crossing, but still only manage to catch around 20% of those who land on Italian beaches. Albanian illegal immigrants are returned immediately to Albania, but often make subsequent attempts to enter Italy. Many non-Albanians, particularly Iraqi Kurds, seek asylum in Italy. It is believed that many illegal immigrants placed in detention centres have been able to escape.

Death toll rises in Italian disaster

Article Abstract:

It is believed that 54 people have been killed in the mudslide that engulfed the town of Sarno, Italy. However, the death toll may rise as 70 people are still missing. The situation remains confused, and families are still being reunited. It has proved very difficult to coordinate the rescue operation, with the interior ministry issuing orders but failing to appreciate the practical problems. Experts believe that additional problems have been caused by poor infrastructure and mass construction.
