Italy ready for mission impossible: intervention in Albania could bring instability to Rome
Article Abstract:
Albania, which remains in severe crisis, is set to receive help shortly from an Italian-led intervention force. Strategic positions will be taken up by 5,000-6,000 troops from Turkey, Italy, France, Spain, Greece and Romania, and it is hoped that the government of Prime Minister Bashkim Fino will be placed in a position to hold fair and free parliamentary elections in Jun 1997. However, the mission is causing considerable political tension in Italy, where the ruling parliamentary majority is refusing to endorse it.

Past demons threaten Italy's bid for change
Article Abstract:
The appointment of media magnate Silvio Berlusconi as Italy's prime minister in Mar 1994 was heralded as the start of a move which would bring about institutional reform and political stability, ushering in a Second Republic. However, the government collapsed after only seven months, and prime minister designate Lamberto Dini is finding it hard to form a majority. Italy appears to have become completely ungovernable again, and faces many political and economic problems.

Italy heads back into a political void
Article Abstract:
Italy continues to suffer great political instability, and this has now reached a point where it may endanger the country's ability to remain a mainstream European power. It could also pose a threat to democracy within Italy. Political parties have attempted to united around two main blocs, but neither bloc is completely acceptable to voters. The centre-right appears too radical, while the centre-left is still too closely associated with the old Italian Communist Party.
