The record industry is determined to take action against people who convert their CD tracks into high-quality Mpeg-1 Layer 3 (MP3) computer sound files and swap them on Zip disks and CDs or via newsgroups and FTP over the Internet. US record concerns have targeted more than 100 Web sites, and have been successful in forcing network administrators to close down many pirate sites. However, they are unlikely to ever eliminate this problem completely. There are more than 750 newsgroups focusing on music, and many of their postings relate to MP3 swaps.

Different pitch, same goal
Article Abstract:
Joanna MacGregor has commissioned a three-part work from pianist and composer Nikki Yeoh for her SoundCircus concert series and record label. This is Yeoh's first record as a composer and MacGregor's first as a jazz improviser. The recording also features bass guitarist Michael Mondesir and drummer Keith LeBlanc. MacGregor is keen for Sound Circus to be a label that will reflect all her musical tastes. She is particularly interested in highlighting diversity of sounds, genres and styles.
