It's strangeness that sells
Article Abstract:
The 1996 annual conference of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BA) attracted around 3,000 adults and 7,000 schoolchildren. However, many of the 315 sessions held over five weekdays attracted on very small numbers of visitors, and some observers have been questioning the purpose of the event. It is designed to bring science to the general public, but there are mixed views about what science should be presented and how it should be presented.

Tripping the light fantastic to the surface of the Sun
Article Abstract:
Scientists are becoming increasingly aware that the changes in weather on the surface of the Sun can affect the weather on Earth. It is possible that long-term changes in the Earth's temperature may be connected with sunspots. Similarly, solar storms can cause radio interference on Earth. Research in this field is being undertaken jointly by the European Space Agency and Nasa. Researchers have also found that the surface of the Sun is slowly moving.

A new row evolves
Article Abstract:
Religious groups in the US are beginning to mount a strong challenge to the theory of evolution. This could eventually create splits in ordinary people's understanding of science and its applications. The US Constitution bans the government establishment of religion, but creationists have been able to sow doubts about the credibility of the theory of evolution by expressing misgivings about its validity.
