It's suburbs, not cities, that stink
Article Abstract:
Cities provide excitement but suburbia tries to recreate the rural life with city advantages. However, the wealth needed for a suburban lifestyle has to be earned in the city, so fast cars create pollution and motorways spoil the countryside to get the suburb-dwellers to work. Cities can provide high standards of living to many in a small area, but when they become too large they cause ecological problems. London has separate areas for shopping, living and working, causing travel problems, whereas other European cities retain a mix of housing, offices, shops and workshops. Planning could revitalise London with mixed usage.

Europe's cities reach for the sky
Article Abstract:
European urban 90s architecture is focusing on tall, filigree-like, light structures. The Torre de Collserola in Barcelona was designed by Sir Norman Foster. It is 950 feet high and is a telecommunications tower. The tower is held by pre-tensioned high strength steel rigging and has 13 floors, 1 of which is a public viewing gallery. Work for the Tour Sans Fins in Paris designed by Jean Nouvel will commence in 1993. The tower will be 1,384 feet high and will cost 600 million pounds sterling to build; it has been commercially funded. It will have 72 office floors.
