It's the end of the world as we know it (but I feel fine)
Article Abstract:
16th century apothecary, astrologer and doctor Michel de Nostredame predicted that a Great King of Terror would descend upon the Earth in the seven month of 1999. He also predicted that a terrible event would occur on the day that the place of the eagle celebrates its great festival. This has been interpreted as meaning Jul 4. Some observers believe that the end of the world will come in Jul 4, 1999, and have been making preparations to protect themselves. Their activities appear to be a reflection of the fact that, while there is nothing worthwhile to believe in, people will believe in extreme things.

Read between the battle lines
Article Abstract:
The vital role of education in promoting wealth, health and democracy in developing countries is highlighted in an Oxfam report entitled 'Education Now.' A child's chance of dying before the age of five is cut by 8% for each additional year of education received by the mother, and education also plays a significant part in economic progress, ensuring that workers have the skills they require to add value. Education also encourages social cohesion, and falling school attendance can bring greater inter-ethnic conflict.
