It's the heart of our democracy, and it's boring
Article Abstract:
The vast majority of ordinary taxpayers in the UK pay close attention to their personal finances, but never consider how the government spends public funds. One solution to this problem may be to connect taxation with public spending item by item. Another may be for the government to retain ultimate responsibility for public services but to instigate a move towards paying for them by a mixture of insurance and savings. It is vital that there is more honesty in taxation, as people are well aware that higher public spending must necessarily bring higher taxes.

Goodbye to Hong Kong, hello to a new prosperity
Article Abstract:
The transfer of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 will mark the end of British colonialism. However, the legacy of colonialism will remain, and this will have an increasingly significant impact as the UK moves into the 21st century. Over recent decades, the economic impact of empire has generally been negative, but is likely to become positive in the 21st century. It will be possible, for example, to establish a more relaxed relationship with Hong Kong, which is set to become the largest economy in the world.

Back in the souk again
Article Abstract:
Visitors to Cairo, Egypt, feel completely unthreatened, even though fundamentalists have attacked tourists in Egypt. Ordinary Egyptians show great charm and kindness. It is easy to reach the three most famous pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx from Cairo, and Cairo itself has a rich cultural heritage. It is particularly worth visiting Cairo's museum, which contains the tomb of Tutankhamen and the royal mummies.
