Ivory Coast leader stirs up his own opposition
Article Abstract:
Ivory Coast president Henri Konan Bedie has expressed his determination not to withdraw a new electoral law, despite protest from opposition parties Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) and the Rally of the Republicans (RDR), which are seeking to have the forthcoming presidential election postponed. Under the new law, presidential candidates must have two Ivorian parents and have lived continuously in Ivory Coast for five years. This has excluded former prime minister Alassane Ouattra, whose father was born in Burkina Faso.

He has ensured that his country has gained and retained international approval, and has recently reaffirmed his commitment to economic development and a party-less political system. The country's new constitution bans party politics, for which Museveni sees no social basis.
