Holy men and evil spirits
Article Abstract:
Mohammed Bashir was jailed for life for murder and Mohammed Nurani for five years for planning grievous bodily harm to twenty-year old Kusor Bashir in Oldham, Lancs. Her parents had summoned the pir, a Muslim holy man, to treat Kusor for depression. Kusor was deprived of food and sleep and beaten to eject the djinn, an evil spirit, from her. The president of the British Pakistan Muslim Welfare Association, Choudhary Nadir Hussain, and the Islamic Cultural Centre at Regent's Park Mosque in London advise against using pirs as many are illegitimate. The Trans-Cultural Psychiatry Unit at Mount Lynfield Hospital, Bradford treats many Muslims with djinns. Dr John Bavington, consultant psychiatrist, says they often have schizophrenia or epilepsy.
