John Pinkerton
Article Abstract:
Computer engineer John Pinkerton read Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, graduating in 1940. He undertook radar research during the second world war, and after the war became a research student in the Cavendish Laboratory. He became involved with designing the Edsac computer, and considerably improved the reliability of the original model. In the mid-1960s, he became head of research in English Electric Computers.

Professor Tom Kilburn

Computer engineer and educator Tom Kilburn was born in Dewsbury, England, in 1921. He studied Mathematics at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, England, and then joined the Telecommunications Research Establishment. He took a Chair in the Dept of Electrical Engineering at Manchester University, England, after the second world war.

Professor Michael Dertouzos
Article Abstract:
Computer scientist Michael Dertouzos was born in Athens, Greece, in 1936. He studied at the University of Arkansas and in 1964 joined the faculty of the Laboratory for Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was director from 1974 until his death.
