The poverty in Britain's back yard
Article Abstract:
Unemployment has risen as high as 70% in some of the poorest areas of the UK, and relentless poverty and its associated problems are having a very negative impact on people's health. Malnutrition and infant mortality are rising, and more children are suffering from chronic complaints and behavioural problems. This has prompted the Save the Children Fund to set up a number of health and community projects.

Hanged man's sister sees hopes shattered
Article Abstract:
Iris Bentley, sister of hanged Derek Bentley, has spent her life trying to clear his name. Although Christopher Craig fired the fatal shot, he was not old enough for hanging and served 10 years in prison. Derek Bentley, 19, had a mental age of 11, but was involved, so the Home Secretary Kenneth Clarke stated that he should not have been led to the gallows but was not entitled to a free pardon.
