Clinton tells Russia: stick to the rules
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton has warned Russia that it must adhere to certain conditions if it wishes to be in the international community. These include not printing money and ensuring that creditors are treated fairly. The US will only offer support if Russia implements the necessary measures for stability and progress. Acting Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin has stated that taxes will be collected and budget spending reduced. However, US officials believe that President Boris Yeltsin will have to make concessions to the parliamentary left-wing opposition.

Oh little town of Bethlehem. Oh dear
Article Abstract:
There is still considerable tension in the area around Bethlehem, West Bank. This is damaging the town's image as it prepares for the year-long Bethlehem 2000 festival. Most recently, rioting was sparked off when a Palestinian man was shot dead at an Israeli checkpoint. There have also been violent clashes in the Arab town of Nazareth over plans to construct a plaza for visiting pilgrims on a site near the Basilica of the Annunciation.
