River chief's pay-off attacked
Article Abstract:
The Commons Public Accounts Committee criticises the National Rivers Authority (NRA) for giving its former chief executive, Dr John Bowman, a 125,000 pounds sterling pay-off after 1 million pounds sterling overspending on the water pollution watchdog's head office in Bristol. It also complains that the corporate affairs director, Margaret Evans and the finance director, Chris Savory, only received written warnings. The board and its chairman, Lord Crickhowell are criticised and the Department of Environment, which is responsible for the NRA, is reprimanded. The National Audit Office discovered that rules for spending public funds, such as obtaining tenders from several firms, had been ignored.

Genetically altered maize has already arrived in Britain
Article Abstract:
Loopholes in European Union law concerning genetically modified organisms are allowing Cargill, one of the UK's largest grain and feed importers, to import genetically engineered maize from the US, even though no European Union licence has been obtained. Farm animals will be fed maize gluten made from the US crop in a move which is technically not contrary to European Union law because the maize has been processed. Cargill points out that heating and mashing the maize has destroyed the genes within it.
