Ken Clarke's path of most resistance is a good thing for the market
Article Abstract:
The ongoing conflict between UK chancellor Kenneth Clarke and Eddie George, governor of the Bank of England, over interest rates is extremely important to the UK economy. Many observers are beginning to feel that Clarke is exploiting the economy for political advantage in the run-up to the forthcoming general election, but he remains in a strong position to resist the Bank of England's demands for a rise in interest rates. It could be argued that the conflict over interest rates is an indication that the more open method of settling monetary policy is proving effective.

A chance to back the boffins and their inventions
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom venture capital companies do not always invest in start-up businesses. The British Venture Capital Association records 1 billion pounds sterling worth of transactions annually, but many of these involve management buyouts and expansions of companies that are well-established. There is a need for capital for start-up companies, especially in high-technology. The Oxford Technology Venture Capital Trust aims to fill this gap and make a profit for investors.
