On the trail of the resistance
Article Abstract:
The ability of bacteria to resist almost any form of antibiotic is attributable to the fact that they have small loops of DNA that are separate from the main chromosome. These loops, known as plasmids, contain back-up genes that protect bacteria in an emergency, such as being attacked by an antibiotic. Resistance to antibiotics can become established very quickly. Researchers are addressing this problem in a number of different ways. At Leeds University, England, research is focusing on identifying potential targets in the bacterial cell, defining the 3-D structure of the target and then designing small molecules able to inhibit the function of the target.

The tiny engines that power life itself
Article Abstract:
Recent developments in biology are revealing that many of the basic processes of life are driven by molecular motors. These are groupings of protein molecules that can operate a mechanical force in a given direction. Areas of research include how the chemical energy of the fuel molecule ATP is converted into mechanical work.

Waste managers of the ant world
Article Abstract:
New research shows that leaf-cutting ants operate a well-ordered system for ensuring that waste material does not harm the colony. There are ants dedicated to dealing with waste material, and these ants are not allowed contact with the rest of the colony.
