Ken Clarke's secret fan club
Article Abstract:
UK Chancellor Kenneth Clarke is attracting growing support from some members of the Labour party. They are mainly very discreet in their admiration for him, but some leading Labour economists have actually made their views known publicly. They feel that he has the strength of will to follow his convictions, and that he has handled the economy with a combination of common sense and boldness. In this way, he contrasts sharply with shadow chancellor Gordon Brown, who seems to lack conviction about his understanding of economics.

Labour: stop taking the tabloids
Article Abstract:
A future Labour government in the UK would not introduce bold or progressive home affairs legislation if Jack Straw were home secretary, according to Roy Jenkins, leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords and home secretary in the 1960s. It would be wise for a future Labour government to adopt a libertarian approach on penal and other matters, as liberty has the advantage of being cheap in terms of public expenditure. Labour's current authoritarian line on social issues shows a lack of determination.

A fair wind for President Kinnock
Article Abstract:
There is a growing opinion that Neil Kinnock, former leader of the UK Labour party, would be the ideal candidate to replace Jacques Santer as president of the European Commission when the latter leaves the post in 1999. It is clear that Kinnock would like to become president, and he certainly has the right background and experience. However, there is strong opposition to him among Conservative Eurosceptics in the UK, who point out that he failed to convince voters in the UK that he should become prime minister.
