Kent to Leeds: a mercy dash too far
Article Abstract:
The death of Malcolm Murray after being flown more than 200 miles from Kent to Yorkshire to a hospital which could treat him for a head injury has highlighted grave concerns about the lack of intensive care and specialist beds in London. Doctors at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, Kent, made considerable efforts to locate an intensive care bed at a hospital with specialist neurosurgical facilities, and found no bed nearer than the one at Leeds General Infirmary. An investigation will now take place into why the system appears to have broken down.

Striking the enemy from within
Article Abstract:
Dr Steven Rosenberg of the US National Institute of Health is experimenting with injecting cancer sufferers with genetically modified cells from their carcinoma. The body naturally produces cancer inhibiting protein and trials by Dr Rosenberg have used tumour infiltrating lymphocytes to deliver these to the tumour. Experiments on terminally ill patients have had some success, but gene therapy is still in its infancy. There is a hope that eventually a vaccine could be made to immunize people against cancer.
