Kitaj and the firing squad
Article Abstract:
Artist R.B. Kitaj finds it very hard to predict what the effect on his work will be of returning to the US after having lived for many years in the UK. He has become very bitter about the art world in the UK, and even goes as far as to accuse art critics who were very negative about his Tate Gallery retrospective exhibition in 1994 of having caused the death of his wife, the artist Sandra Fisher. He feels that he attracts hatred, and regards himself as an outsider. However, he is very aware of the work of contemporary artists, and admits that this work affects him in many different ways.

John Berger: ways of seeing, ways of biking
Article Abstract:
Poet and essayist John Berger regards drawing as a form of light relief, using it when writing becomes difficult. He initially trained as an artist, and had a solo show at Wildenstein's in 1953. He gave up practising as an artist in the same year, but has continued to draw from time to time. He is currently showing 14 drawings at Purdy Hicks in London, England. The drawings, which are mainly in ink or charcoal, clearly have considerable importance for him. However, he remains modest about his achievements as an artist.

A passion for paint through the sins of the flesh
Article Abstract:
Artist Paula Rego works from life, rather than from her imagination. She uses models, and constantly refers to the reality in front of her as she builds up her works. She is currently working on 16 costume dramas which have been partly inspired by the permanent collection at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, England, where they are to be shown in summer 1998. They have been more specifically inspired by the 19th-century Portuguese novel 'The Sins of the Father,' by Eca de Queiros.
