Kohl's rottweiler is called to heel
Article Abstract:
New German government spokesman Otto Hauser has attracted considerable controversy because of his lack of tact. He has been critical of the fact that east Germans continue to support the Party of Democratic Socialism, rather than the Christian Democrats, and has also spread communist innuendo about Gerhard Schroder, the chancellor-candidate for the Social Democrats. The Christian Democrats are aware that they cannot dismiss Hauser, as to lose two spokesmen in a very short time so close to the elections in Sep 1998 would be very politically damaging.

Kohl's foe may pull Britain into European inner circle
Article Abstract:
Europe is ready for a realignment that would give the UK a leading position, according to Lower Saxony Prime Minister Gerhard Schroder. He believes that a German-French-British triangle should replace the Franco-German axis that has dominated Europe for many years. He is a strong supporter of the policies of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and even backs Blair's stance on monetary union. Some observers believe that he has a good chance of defeating German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
