Labour's guru gives warning on jobs market inequality
Article Abstract:
It is vital that the current period of economic prosperity is used to tackle underlying structural difficulties, according to former US Labor Secretary Robert Reich. He believes that employment inequality has become a more serious problem, with many people experiencing falling standards of living. The Anglo-Saxon model has been very successful in creating employment, but has not dealt with insecurity or inequality. He is in favour of a minimum wage and additional tax reliefs or benefit payments to increase the income of those only earning low wages.

We have to add social capital to the free market equation
Article Abstract:
There is a growing trend among economists towards making value judgements, an approach which has always been carefully avoided in the past. Economic analysis which takes values into account has been seen recently in relation to economic development, national competitive advantage and unemployment. It is now becoming more widely accepted that culture, values and history can have a significant impact on actual economic outcomes, on levels of wealth and on employment levels.

Inequality the price that some have to pay
Article Abstract:
Bill Birch, New Zealand's finance minister, is extremely committed to reforming the country's economy. He has attracted considerable criticism since he introduced large-scale labour reforms in 1991, but his policies have succeeded in creating new jobs and in keeping underlying inflation below 2%. He believes that New Zealand can sustain economic growth of around 5%.
