Six disasters; 368 people dead; no successful prosecutions. Now the Government acts
Article Abstract:
UK Home Secretary Jack Straw is planning to introduce a new offence of corporate killing. This would mean that the directors of companies which can be proved to have caused deaths through inadequate safety would face charges and unlimited fines. This offence would apply in cases where corporate directors could be shown to have not dealt with a foreseeable danger. The government was under strong pressure to act on this issue as a result of the rail accident in Southall, London, England, in Sep 1997.

Summer of discontent as jobs vanish
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers' orders fell in every region of the UK in the four months to Jul 1998, and orders are predicted to decline further over the following four-month period. Manufacturers are making extensive job cuts, and problems in manufacturing are now affecting the whole country. Government ministers have attributed manufacturers' difficulties to world economic conditions and to the Asian economic crisis. Manufacturers across the country are pessimistic about economic prospects.
