'Last chance' to save Earth
Article Abstract:
The UN Conference on Environment and Development held at Rio De Janeiro in June 1992 was recommended by Gro Harlem Brundtland, the Prime Minister of Norway, in the Bryndtland Commission report 'Our Common Future' in 1987. The organisers now think of the summit as the beginning of a long process. One hundred countries will be represented but the gap between First and Third World countries may prevent environmental agreement. The Northern countries hoped to encourage Third World countries not to destroy tropical forests or pollute the atmosphere wih greenhouse gases, but the developing countries feel entitled to profit from their natural wealth. They hope to have debts wiped out and aid increased.

Britain fails to impress greens
Article Abstract:
The Friends of the Earth International, Greenpeace International, the Alliance of Northern People for Environment and Development and Brazilian pressure groups judged the US the worst performer at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in Jun 1992, Saudia Arabia second and Britain third. Britain had delayed in signing the biodiversity convention and failed to support other European countries wishing to move faster to combat global warming. The biodiversity treaty and another on overcoming climate change threatened by pollution were approved by John Major. The Summit called for a convention preventing the spread of deserts. Development aid and protecting forests were unresolved issues.

Global warming gets cold shoulder
Article Abstract:
World leaders are soon to attend a world climate conference in Berlin, Germany, but no firm decisions on action to be taken to halt global warming are expected. Countries with a strongly oil-based economy are opposed to any commitment which would cut use of fossil fuels, while some countries with high levels of greenhouse gas emissions have already informed the secretariat of the Earth Summit treaty that they will not meet their year 2000 stabilisation commitment.
