The odd weekend with Auntie
Article Abstract:
Wood Norton Hall in Evesham, England, a large former country residence where the BBC used to train its engineers, is now operating as a hotel. It has the facilities generally associated with country house hotels, such as a swimming pool and squash courts, but also still has the satellite dishes and huts which were used by the BBC. The BBC is also creating links with the tourist industry through its Visitor Centre at Broadcasting House in London, England, which is due to open in Oct 1997, and the World Service Shop, also in London, England.

Wine, song and no chores in sight
Article Abstract:
Youth hostels have traditionally offered only basic facilities and a rather austere, regimented atmosphere. However, the YHA has now started to adopt a less rigorous approach, with the rules on issues such as alcohol being relaxed. Official YHA hostels have had to start offering more comfortable facilities as they face growing competition from the independent sector, and have even dropped the policy of requiring visitors to do jobs such as cleaning.

The hostel from hell
Article Abstract:
Mr Beds, a cheap youth hostel in Manchester, is situated in a very run-down part of the city, on an ugly council estate. It takes up to six backpackers a night, offering the normal facilities which would be expected at a youth hostel. It tends to attract visitors who are looking for a different perspective on the city from that which is obtained by ordinary tourists.
