We may need the Americans, but peace will still come
Article Abstract:
There is considerable concern in Northern Ireland about the prospects for the Good Friday peace agreement, but there is not yet a great feeling of crisis. Few people feel that the peace process is about to flounder, although nobody knows how to resolve the decommissioning issue. There seems to be a strong sense of optimism, despite the fact that punishment beatings are still being carried out. Northern Ireland is now enjoying relative peace, and the leading groups do not seem to wish to return to outright conflict. It is possible that the opposing sides will not reach true agreement until the US intervenes.

Finally, a future that can defeat the past
Article Abstract:
Many significant events have taken place in Northern Ireland in 1998. Some have served to advance the peace process, while others have been setbacks. However, the overall effect has been positive, and it is widely anticipated that further progress towards a lasting peace settlement will be made in 1999. The main area of conflict remains decommissioning. Northern Irish politics are very unpredictable, and it is difficult to say exactly what will happen.
