Lawyers' sinister death that still haunts Ulster
Article Abstract:
Solicitor Pat Finucane was murdered in Feb 1989, four months after having obtained the acquital of Pat McGeown, a key figure in both the IRA and Sinn Fein who was accused of murder, grievous bodily harm and possession of firearms. The murder, which was carried out by three loyalist gunmen, has attracted considerable controversy. Some observers feel that it was partly the result of claims by then Home Office minister Douglas Hogg that some solicitors in Northern Ireland were unduly sympathetic to the IRA. After Finucane's death, Ulster Defence Association sources claimed that the police had in effect encouraged them to target him.

A rare moment to celebrate as Ulster's old absolutes crumble
Article Abstract:
The Northern Irish peace agreement contains elements which are a cause of concern for both Unionists and Republicans. The agreement is generally supported by Catholics, so referendums would be successful even if only a minority of Protestants were to vote in favour. However, the deal must gain the support of a majority of Protestants if it is to have real moral authority. There is still considerable uncertainty on both sides, and this will be exploited by those who oppose the agreement. However, those who support it seem to be gaining the upper hand.

When the worst of times became a time for conciliation
Article Abstract:
There has been significant progress towards peace in Northern Ireland in 1997, even though there is still a long way to go. It is likely that further acts of violence will be committed, but there is also a widespread feeling that the peace process is becoming more firmly embedded. There will be many challenges to address in 1998, including whether the truce can be maintained and whether outsiders will hamper the peace process. It is also important to be aware that relations between the nationalist and Unionist communities remain very strained.
