Le Pen: a fear in Provence
Article Abstract:
Jean-Marie Le Pen, 63, leader of the extreme-right National Front in France, may obtain 30% of the votes cast in the election for the regional council of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur on March 22, 1992. He has gradually increased his political popularity since founding the party in 1972. From 0.74% of the votes in the 1974 presidential election to 14.4% in the 1988 one, the imminent election could give him 15% across the whole country. He is by far the most powerful western Europe extreme-right politician, the basis of his policies being to send immigrants back to their homelands and thereby solve the social problems of France.

Racism brews in a French thieves' kitchen
Article Abstract:
Marseilles, France is a city of violence and crime. There are 847,000 immigrants in the population of 100,000. The National Front proposes to repatriate immigrants and review the citizenship of new French citizens. Tactics also include suggestions of a North-South war where Islamic fundamentalism in Algeria would bring refugees to France. An opinion poll gives the National Front candidates 25%, which would produce 12 elected members from the Marseilles area.
