Old enemies reshape the Middle East
Article Abstract:
Syria is developing links with Iraq following closer links between Israel and Turkey. Border posts between Iraq and Syria have been reopened, and this may lead to the reopening of a land route from Damascus in Syria to Tehran in Iran, across Iraq. Syrians claim that trade with Iraq was resumed by businessmen to help alleviate suffering in Iraq. Military co-operation between Israel could leave Syria with Israeli forces on three sides. Syria does not wish to be passive in the face of this development.

Syria painted as the villain of the Middle East
Article Abstract:
Recent developments such as closer military links between Turkey and Israel and Israeli threats to attack Syrian targets in Lebanon have served to put Syria on the defensive, both politically and militarily. It is greatly concerned that it is still on the US's list of 'countries supporting terrorism,' as this makes it almost impossible for it to receive economic aid and US technology. Syria has come under particular pressure following the election victory of Likud in Israel.
