Paul Schrader was brought up in the Dutch Calvinist church and was not allowed to go to the cinema till he was 17. He became a film critic and director. He wrote a book on three great spiritual film makers. Schrader's films have rage and madness. His new film 'Light Sleeper', which is very personal, portrays disintegration and decay. The latest film from director Tony Scott is 'Crimson Tide,' a submarine adventure starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. It has been warmly received by audiences, and has prompted considerable interest in employment with the submarine service. Scott has now made a deal to purchase Shepperton Studios, which will allow him to spend more time in the UK.
