Less, not more, intervention is the key to jobs
Article Abstract:
Significant trends have emerged in employment patterns in the UK. The decline in the number of people of working age will mean that almost everybody of working age will eventually be employed. Technology is making unemployment specific, rather than general, with some employers now seeking skills that only a very few people can offer. Those seeking work must now be more physically and mentally flexible, and must demonstrate an ability to apply basic literacy and numeracy skills to emerging tasks.

Downsizing isn't always a dirty word
Article Abstract:
Unemployment in the UK is gradually improving, although many companies are still making people redundant. This has created a conflict between the unemployment statistics and people's experiences, and there is still a strong atmosphere of insecurity in the labour market. However, it is possible to argue that there are some positive aspects of job insecurity. Individuals can take advantage of a more flexible market for their skills, and there can also be advantages for society as a whole.

German reforms trigger a seismic shift in Europe
Article Abstract:
The German government is shortly to publish details of planned tax reforms. These will aim at rebalancing the tax system from direct taxation to indirect and from high nominal rates of tax to lower overall rates. It is possible that inheritance taxation and local corporation tax will be cut, and wealth tax may also be abolished. There is particular interest in plans to reduce the top rate of income tax to 40% or possible 35%, from the current 53%.
