Let the English voice be heard
Article Abstract:
There are mixed views about whether English people, who are in the majority in the UK, should be allowed to have a say in determining relations with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Some observers believe that the inhabitants of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should be allowed to determine their own sovereign rights in an exclusive referendum. Others feel that the views of the English should be taken into account too, as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland depend on England as the main source of government wealth.

Ulster: an issue suppressed
Article Abstract:
For 22 years the House of Commons has not allowed any divisions of opinion on Northern Ireland. The government has assumed the Cabinet attitude of resisting terrorism without independent contemplation. Voters cannot express their views on the cost of policing Northern Ireland or suggest transferring to a UN peace-keeping force. The Protestant majority in Northern Ireland is less than 2% of the total UK population. This extremist minority has influenced British policy without asking the whole electorate their wishes.

Is Peter Mandelson as good as he thinks?
Article Abstract:
Peter Mandelson, the UK Labour party's director of communications, is assured of an important post if the party wins the forthcoming general election. Indeed, he could even become one of the most powerful people in the country. However, he is strongly disliked by many leading members of the Labour party, and they would place a great deal of the blame on him if the party were to lose the election. He is widely regarded as shrewd and intelligent, but also has an ability to make enemies.
