Life lived on a higher level
Article Abstract:
Ski resorts which are now large and bustling were only small hamlets when staying in the Alps first became popular, according to author and journalist Janet Adam Smith. Visitors were generally upper or middle class, and they brought with them the trappings of a privileged background. It was not until some years later that it became fashionable for climbers and skiers to enjoy the hardships of exploring the mountains. She feels that enjoyment has been a key element of mountain holidays throughout the generations, however they have been spent.

'Over-zealous head' is marked down
Article Abstract:
Many MPs have expressed reservations about the main recommendation contained in the report of the Nolan committee investigating standards in public life, that a parliamentary Commissioner for Standards should be appointed. Prime minister John Major has come under pressure from the Labour party to agree to the Nolan proposal that MPs should give full details of all consultancies and other paid employment. It is now likely that the recommendations will be considerably reduced in scope.

Betrayal of the innocent infants by the carers they trusted
Article Abstract:
An independent inquiry has found that children as young as two were sexually abused at Shieldfield Nursery in Newcastle, England, and in flats, houses and caravans in the area. The abuse was first uncovered in 1993, but the prosecution of nursery assistants Chris Lillie and Dawn Reed collapsed in 1995. The inquiry, set up after the collapse of the prosecution, found clear evidence that others outside the nursery were involved in abusing children.
