The anarchist of the boulevards
Article Abstract:
The Royal Academy has an exhibition of Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro entitled 'The Impressionist in the City' in Jul 1993. Pissarro painted the countryside until an eye problem required him to work indoors. He painted city scenes portraying society from his hotel window in Paris, Rouen, Dieppe and Le Havre, France. He was a Jewish, anti-clerical, anti-military anarchist. He observed movement and formations of crowds on the street and painted the bustle and animation. His pictures portray people's behaviour en masse sympathetically from above.

'I recorded it all as history unfolding, believing that it could never happen again.' (Don McCullin's photographs, Barbican Centre, London, England)
Article Abstract:
The Barbican Centre in London, England, is currently staging a retrospective entitled 'Sleeping with Ghosts.' This covers around 200 photographs taken by Don McCullin, a photojournalist who covered all the world's major disasters between the mid-1960s and mid-1980s. It includes all of his most powerful photographs, and presents the view that human tragedy is constantly taking place. This could be seen as rather too general a view, relieving people of the obligation to try to prevent human tragedy happening.

The worlds that time forgot
Article Abstract:
The exhibition entitled 'TheEarth and the Heavens' currently being held at the British Museum coverrs many ancient andmodern world-maps and star-maps. Each map is exhibited as a conceptual scheme, a culturaldocument and a world of art in its own right, rather than as part of a gradual progression ingeographical knowledge. They are all valuable for the view of the world they give which is farwider than a simple geographical one.
