Light out of chaos
Article Abstract:
A Portuguese-English production of the Chester Cycle of Mystery Plays has been performing in Portugal and transfers to the Mermaid Theatre, London on Apr 22 1992. The Mysteries, a fourteenth-century cycle of plays with a powerful story, were originally performed over three days and now take place every five years. The large cast communicate with each other by physical expression as the dialogue is spoken in medieval language, Latin, Portuguese and English. The London Theatre Ensemble received 30,000 pounds sterling from Lisbon's Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to fund this production. Portuguese actors work for the same company throughout their careers but British actors move about, making them more adaptable.

Chaos as the sun sets on the British Empire
Article Abstract:
The British Virgin Islands government suggest a partnership between London and the colonies. Colonial service personnel retire in 1997, leaving the six geographical departments of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with limited skills. A new department of specialised personnel is recommended. Britain has 13 dependent territories but the FCO no longer looks after them efficiently: many Caribbean islands are threatened by drug smuggling, fraud and money-laundering.

Mogadishu chaos marks UN withdrawal
Article Abstract:
Gunmen and looters invaded the airfield in Mogadishu, Somalia, immediately after the recent withdrawal of UN troops, despite the presence nearby of US and Italian marines. The UN has deployed a 30,000-strong force from 28 countries in Somalia over the last two years, but is now leaving the country. The operation is seen as a failure, with the UN presence having done nothing to resolve the problems of famine and violence.
