Look to Scotland to see if coalition politics can work
Article Abstract:
Political developments in Scotland have the potential to significantly shape the future of politics in the UK as a whole. In particular, the Liberal Democrats seem willing to risk the collapse of the coalition in Scotland rather than accede to the imposition of tuition fees for university students. The Liberal Democrats must be aware that it will be very difficult for Prime Minister Tony Blair to argue in favour of electoral reform in a referendum in the next parliament if the only model of cooperative national politics has suffered rapid collapse.

The future of Scotland is the same as the future of Britain
Article Abstract:
The Scottish Parliament elections seem set to be the most important single political event in the UK in 1999. It is important that those outside Scotland recognize that the future of Scotland is also the future of the UK. Scotland plays a significant role in the UK's international standing, and Scottish politicians have a high profile on the national political scene. Scots must also recognize the importance of not declining into a national politics weighed down by an obsession with national status.
